Albert Edward Hughes was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, lived at Eastham, Cheshire and enlisted in Liverpool. He went to France with the original contingent of the 19th (3rd Pals) Battalion, and was killed in action in the attack on Guillemont Village, Somme on 30 July 1916. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Sold with copied newspaper cutting, which states that he was known in the regiment as ‘Smiler’, this including picture of recipient.
