M.C. London Gazette 1 January 1917. The following official recommendation is held in the 55th Divisioal records, Liverpool Library. ‘For initiative and fine leadership. He was in command of ‘C’ Coy. after his Captain had become a casualty he led his company in an attack on the enemy trenches near Guillemont on the morning of 13.8.16 with great gallantry until wounded. He showed conspicuous ability in organising and carrying out this difficult operation at extremely short notice. He has always set a fine example of coolness under fire.’
Research confirms that he received a gun shot wound to the head and shoulders on 13 August 1916.
