D.C.M. London Gazette 19 August 1916 ‘When the leading bayonet men in a raid were wounded, Private Cowman at once came forward and held a traverse alone with conspicuous courage and coolness. His conduct conduced to the capture of a machine-gun.’
Second Lieutenant Frederick Gregory Cowman, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J. G. Cowman of 1 Cavendish Road, Blundellsands, Liverpool, was educated at Liverpool College and was a member of staff of T. & J. Brocklebank Ltd., steamship owners, Liverpool. He enlisted in November 1914, at the age of 18, receiving his commission sometime in November 1916.
Second Lieutenant Cowman received a bomb wound to his right leg, and as a result was evacuated to England on 5 July 1917. He was not passed fit again until 15 May 1918 when he returned to France, being killed in action on 28 September 1918, whilst attached to the 1st Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. He is buried in Noyelles-sur-L’Escaut Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
