John Channing was born in the Parish of Musbury, near Axminster, Devon, in December 1833, and enlisted into the 1st Battalion at Dorchester on 13 May 1854. During just five months service in the Crimea, he was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkermann, and at the siege of Sebastopol, earning the medal with four clasps. He also served in British North America for 8 years 9 months and completed his term of engagement on 10 August 1875, having served for 21 years 90 days.After his discharge he set up business as a dairyman in Bristol.
