1914 Star, with clasp (3751 Pte., 1/Rif. Brig.); British War and Victory Medals (3751 Pte., Rif. Brig.); General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Iraq (3751 Pte., Rif. Brig.) surname officially corrected; Defence Medal; Special Constabulary Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (William Carter) together with forwarding letter and named card box of issue for the last, marked ‘Dead’, British Legion lapel badge in named and numbered box, and a ribbon bar, generally very fine or better (7) £120-140

According to copied newspaper cuttings which accompany this group, Private William Carter served during the Great war with the 1st Battalion and was a prisoner of war for over three years. After the war he served in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and during W.W.II he was a special constable in the Cirencester sub-division. He died in August 1947 and had worked for 22 years as a gardener to Colonel Paley, late of the Rifle Brigade.

His Medal Index Card notes that the G.S.M. for Iraq was returned 15/12/24 and re-issued 12/2/25, no doubt for corrections to be made to the surname.
