John Wackett was born at St Lukes, Middlesex, and enlisted into the 8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, at St Pauls Churchyard. He was killed in action in the ‘Liquid Fire’ attack at Chateau Hooge, Ypres, on 30 July 1915. 2nd Lieutenant Sidney Woodroffe, of the 8th Battalion, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for this famous action, whilst his elder brother, Captain Leslie Woodroffe, also 8th Battalion, was severely wounded and awarded the M.C. in the same action.
