Colour-Sergeant Howard received his M.S.M. in July 1953, at which time he was living at St Austell in Cornwall. He is mentioned in the Rifle Brigade Chronicle of 1910 as having competed, as Colour-Sergeant Instructor of Musketry, in the Duke of Connaught’s Cup, the Queen Victoria Trophy and the Whitbread Cup; and in the Chronicle of 1912, where it says, ‘This year the Btn suffers a great loss in Colour Sergeant Instructor of Musketry C. Howard who has gone to the Cambridge O.T.C. as Sergeant Major. An excellent shot both individually and in teams and an ideal instructor, we shall greatly miss him.’ He served for 28 years in the Rifle Brigade and then worked for English China Clays for 21 years. He was mentioned in despatches as an R.S.M. in the Great War.
