Charles Henry Sell was born on 30 April 1889, and educated at Dulwich College. He studied accountancy 1907-11, and joined his father’s advertising firm, Sells Ltd, in London in 1911, also spending a year in Winnipeg, Canada, before returning to London in 1914. He became a director of the firm in 1919. Sell joined the London Raifle Brigade as a rifleman in May 1907 and was mobilized on 4 August 1914. He was wounded twice during the war and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the London Rifle Brigade in January 1916. During the Second War he served as a Captain in the Rifle Brigade, T.A.R.O.
