James Gardiner Sorby was born in and enlisted at Darlington. Serving with the 19th Field Ambulance R.A.M.C. he entered the France/Flanders theatre of award on 21 August 1914. Entitled to clasp. Serving with the 74th Field Ambulance, he died of wounds on 14 October 1918, aged 23 years. He was buried in the Delaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, France. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Sorby of 3 Croft Villas, Darlington.
