John Warwick Illius was born in Campo Grande, Bahia, Brazil on 9 October 1875, the son of John Guillermo Illius, Superintendent of the Bahia Steam Navigation Company. He received his medical training at St. Bart’s and gained the M.R.C.S. 1900 and L.R.C.P. Lond. 1900. Entering the Indian Medical Service, he was appointed a Lieutenant in July 1902; Captain in July 1905; Major in January 1914 and Lieutenant-Colonel in January 1922. Appointed a F.R.C.S. Ed. in 1912. Served in the Great War in France and Belgium, 1914-15; Balkans and Egypt, 1915-16, and Persia and the Persian Gulf, 1916-19. Illius retired on 4 September 1925.
