Richard William Chambers was born in Manningtree, Essex and enlisted at Harwich. As a Private in the R.A.M.C. he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 18 October 1915. As a Private serving with the 40th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C., he accidentally drowned in the Persian Gulf on 25 September 1916, aged 22 years. His name is commemorated on the Basra memorial.
