James Isaac Wheeler was born in Woolwich, Kent. A Butcher by occupation, he attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Chippenham on 21 February 1901, aged 22 years, 9 months. Posted to the 1st (Wiltshire) Company, 1st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, he served in South Africa, 14 March 1901-27 August 1902. He was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902 having completed his period of service. With copied service papers and other research which indicates that the Army L.S. & G.C. was awarded to his father.
