Charles Howse was born in Windsor, Buckinghamshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Royal Lancaster Regiment at Reading on 3 January 1878, aged 18 years, 4 months. He served in South Africa, December 1878-February 1880; West Indies, February 1880-January 1889 and South Africa, January 1900-August 1901. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in 1896. Additionally entitled to the clasp, South Africa ‘1901’. As Acting Sergeant-Major of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment (Permanent Staff), he claimed his discharge, having given notice, on 31 August 1903.
