William Edwards enlisted into the Royal Lancaster Regiment in December 1899. He went with the 1st Battalion to Malta where he trained as a Mounted Infantryman. He then went with a half company of King’s Own Mounted Infantrymen to South Africa, landing in May 1902 and remaining there until April 1903. As part of the 1st Battalion he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 23 August 1914. Notes with the lot state that ‘Edwards was present at Le Cateau in the Retreat from Mons, and in early 1915 he was reported as a “prisoner of war - repatriated”. He was presumably severely wounded and taken prisoner in the early months of World War 1 and no longer fit for service was presumably repatriated by the Germans’. Later discharged.
