Walter Bulmer Tate Abbey was born on 8 August 1872, the son of Walter Abbey of Wellingborough Grange, Northamptonshire. Following his education at Monkton Combe and Sandhurst he joined the 2nd Durham Light Infantry in 1892. The following year he transferred to the Indian Army, serving with the 7th Bombay Lancers and in 1896, the 32nd Lancers. Served on the Burma Commission in 1902, was a Deputy Commissioner in 1915, served in operations against the Kara rebels in 1898 and on the N.E. Frontier during 1914-15 - receiving the 1914-15 Star and being mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 4 July 1916). Abbey commanded the Chin Hills Operation, 1917-18, for which he was again mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 23 July 1920) and was awarded the C.B.E. Lieutenant-Colonel Abbey died on 29 March 1949.
