Gilbert McGuire was born on 15 May 1886. In 1907 he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon 3rd Class in the Indian Medical Department. In this capacity he served in the Great War, serving in France, 16 October 1915-16 July 1916, and in Iraq, 17 July 1916-4 August 1918. On 4 March 1919 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon 2nd Class, ranking as a Sub-Conductor. He was employed for many years with civil appointments, and in 1920 was on special duty with the Influenza Enquiry. He was promoted to Assistant Surgeon 1st Class on 4 March 1924. He was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in 1926, this notified in Indian Army Order 392 of June 1926, and in 1930 he was awarded the I.S.O. In 1935 he was awarded the Jubilee Medal when he was listed as an ‘Assistant Inspector-General of Civil Hospitals, Lahore’. The following year he was awarded the M.B.E. In 1937 McGuire was a recipient of the Coronation Medal and in September the same year was promoted to Lieutenant (Senior Assistant Surgeon), I.M.D. He attained the rank of Captain (Senior Assistant Surgeon) in June 1940 and retired from the service on 15 May 1941.
