Previously a Jemadar in the Indian Army; he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles on 1 January 1948 and was promoted to Captain in September 1952.

He was mentioned in despatches for Malaya (London Gazette 4 April 1952) and retired in 1979.
