James Stewart first went out to France as a Private in the Cameron Highlanders in May 1915, but was subsequently commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion in August 1918. He died of wounds on 25 October 1918, aged 28 years, and is buried in the Vichte Military Cemetery, Belgium. The son of John and Elizabeth Stewart of Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, he left a widow, Margaret M. B. Stewart, who was living in Edinburgh.
