James Coan, a native of Leigh, Lancashire, first went out to France as a Private in the East Lancashire Regiment in mid-July 1915. Subsequently transferring to the Royal Engineers, he was awarded his M.M. for gallant deeds in 183/Tunnelling Company, and was discharged to the Reserve in February 1919.
