HMS Royal George, a 100-gun first-rate launched in February 1756, was anchored with the fleet at Spithead preparatory to sailing for Gibraltar when, while being heeled at an angle to permit minor repairs below the waterline on 29 August 1782, the ship rolled over rapidly and sank with the loss of some 800 lives, including 300 women and 60 children who were visiting the vessel. The wreck was salvaged in the late 1830s and subsequently destroyed with explosives
