William Hannam was born in the Parish of St Giles, Middlesex, and enlisted for the 26th Foot in August 1841. He served with the 26th Foot in China from June 1842 to February 1843, but was seemingly too late to qualify for the medal. He transferred to the 1/60th Rilfes in June 1845 and was present during the Punjab campaign at the siege of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, surrender of the Sikh Army and their expulsion beyond the Khyber Pass, and the occupation of Attock and Peshawar. In December 1849 he took part in the expedition against the insurgent villages of Luggoo, Pallee, Zoormundie and Thearkana, on the North West Frontier of India, and is entitled to the India medal for these operations. During the Indian Mutiny he was shot in the right thigh on 11 May 1857, and took part in the siege operations against Delhi. He later served in the Rohilcund campaign in 1858, including the actions of Bagwallah and Nugena, the relief of Moradabad, action at Dojura, and assault and capture of Barielly. He was also present at the actions at Bunk-ka-Gong and Rissoolpore, the attack and capture of Fort Mittowlee, and action at Biswah.
