Charles Fischer was born and enlisted in Wandsworth, Surrey. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 25 September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos. The 2nd Battalion, with whom Fischer was serving, suffered heavy casualties on this day, when within ten minutes of the opening of the British assault, with gas shells, the wind changed direction, and blew the gas back over the attacking troops.
