Henry Budd Stubbs enlisted into the General Cavalry on 3 September 1914 at the age of 34. He was posted to France on 26 January 1915 with the 19th Hussars, before being granted a commission into the Royal Flying Corps as an Observer on 2 August that same year.
Stubbs was taken prisoner of war along with the pilot of his aircraft on 28 September 1915, when, after they had taken off for a long distance reconnaissance patrol, they encountered some severe weather conditions. These caused them to use more petrol than they had anticipated, necessitating them to land in a field near Ghent, where they enquired of a farm labourer where they might get some petrol. He informed them that they were in German held territory, and on returning to their plane they were surrounded by German soldiers. On 10 April 1918 they were repatriated to Holland, before their eventual return to England on 18 November 1918.
