James Farmer was born in the Parish of Newton, Leicestershire, and enlisted into the 95th Foot on 17 April 1805, at Belton, Leicesterhire, aged 18 years. He served continuously in Portugal, Spain and France, being wounded in Portugal by a gun shot in the left arm, also at Badajoz where he received a gun shot wound to the right knee, and again wounded at Salamanca. He was finally discharged on 16 February 1819, on reduction of the military establishment.
