William Phillippo was born in the Parish of Rudham, near Fakenham, Norfolk, and enlisted for the 9th Lancers in January 1845, aged 21 years 6 months. He served in India for 11 years and 233 days, until falling from his horse whilst stationed at Umballa, India, hitting his head and back badly, with resultant epileptic fits and medical discharge from the service in October 1856. He served at the passage of the Chenab, 4 December 1848, and at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat.
