Alexander Wardrop was born at sea on 4 January 1831, son of Alexander Wardrop, a Madras merchant. He was educated at the Edinburgh Military Academy and was nominated for the Bombay Infantry in November 1851. Posted to the 29th Bombay Native Infantry, he served in the Persian Expeditionary Force of 1857 and was present at the bombardment and capture of Mohumra and pursuit of the Persian army. He retired in May 1888, becoming Brevet Colonel later that year, and was promoted to Major-General in November 1891. He died on 5 January 1908.
