Born at Carrickbeg, Waterford, he enlisted for the 2/3rd Foot in September 1857, aged 19 years. He served at Malta 4 years 6 months, Gibraltar 2 years, West Indies 2 years, and in the East Indies for 10 years 1 month. He re-engaged at Belfast in April 1867 and transferred to the 1/3rd Foot with whom he served in the Perak expedition. He was discharged for medical reasons in May 1878.
