Michael Clue was born in the Parish of St Andrew’s, New Town, Surrey, Jamaica. He enlisted for the West India Regiment at Up Park Camp, Jamaica, in July 1883, aged 19 years. He served overseas in West Africa from March 1886 to November 1888, during which period he took part in the expedition against the Yonnie Tribe in 1887-8. The 1st West India Regiment were the only troops present at these operations. He was discharged in December 1891 suffering from a disease of the heart.
