Born at Hathern, Loughborough, Leicestershire, Roper was an Engine Driver before enlisting in October 1893. He took part in the Nile expedition of 1898 and was discharged medically unfit in November 1903. On the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted into the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, and in November 1914 joined the battalion in France. He served for the duration of the war and was discharged in February 1919. He died on 8 May 1954, at the age of 84 years, a retired Quarryman, then living in Haslingden, Lancashire.
