William Stephen Holden was born on 16 February 1870. He served in India 1895, with the Chitral Relief Force, attached to the Store Group Armourer Section. During the operations on the Punjab Frontier 1897-98, he served as Armourer Sergeant to the 1st Battalion The Buffs. He became Regimental Sergeant Major, Armourer Section, Army Ordnance Department, on 1 April 1912; Hon. Lieut., 10 June 1917; retired 17 April 1918.
