Corporal Henry Harper was specially recommended for service at Benin and was promoted to Sergeant in June 1897. However, his early promise was short lived, and it is apparent from his service record that he had a liking for drink. Having been promoted to Sub-Conductor in September 1901, he was first tried by Court Martial for drunkeness in February 1902, and thereafter on no less than three more occasions before being discharged in September 1903. Sold with copy service papers.
