John Fraser Raper was born on 7 October 1828, son of General Felix Vincent Raper, Bengal Army. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Bengal Artillery, in December 1844, and embarked for India by the overland route via Egypt, arriving at Calcutta in March 1845. He served during the Second Sikh War and was present at the storming of Mooltan and the battle of Goojerat. He saw no further active service, retiring in December 1878 with the Honorary rank of Major General, and died at Eastbourne, Sussex, on 6 March 1892.
