James Whelan joined the Royal Artillery in 1895 and served 19 years in the ranks, becoming Battery Sergeant Major. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1913, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant ‘For Services in the Field’ in January 1915. He served in Aden from March 1916 to July 1918, when he went to India for service with the 35th Pack Battery. He retired in February 1922 and died in 1964.
