Charles Radley Brittain Thorne was born at Southsea on 23 March 1850, son of Charles Thorne, a Paymaster in the Royal Navy. He was educated at Eton in 1863-66, and appointed Ensign in the 15th Regiment on 25 December 1867.He transferred to the 3rd 60th Regiment in January 1868, and was promoted to Lieutenant on 28 October 1870. He joined the regiment in South Africa at Fort Chelmsford in May 1879 and served with it throughout the remainder of the campaign, being present in the advance of Crealock’s Division to Port Durnford, and the second advance on Ulundi. He was promoted to Captain on 24 July 1880, and appointed Hon. Major in the 7th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was appointed J.P. for Somerset in 1888, and died at Bath on 25 February 1932.
