Percy Knight Hale Coke was born at Neath on 19 May 1858, and was commissioned into the 24th Foot on 26 March 1879. He transferred to the 15th Hussars in May 1880, and took part in the Boer War of 1881. He served with the Light Camel Regiment in the Nile expedition of 1884-85, for which the 15th Hussars furnished two officers and 42 other ranks. He transferred to the 14th Hussars in August 1888 and resigned in August of the following year. Coke served as a Major in the 19th Lothian and Border Horse, 6th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, during the Boer War of 1899-1902 (Medal with two Clasps).
