Charles George Smith enlisted for the 92nd Highlanders at Edinburgh on 21 November 1865, aged 21. After service in the Afghan War of 1879-80, Smith went with the regiment to South Africa, where he took part in the 1st Boer War. He was killed in action at Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881.
