John Connor was born in Liverpool and enlisted there on 24 April 1894, aged 16 years, a musician by trade. He was wounded by a gunshot wound at the battle of Omdurman (London Gazette 30 September 1898, p.5733), one of only six battle casualties for the regiment during the whole Sudan Campaign. He transferred to the Grenadier Guards on 2 November 1906 and served in France from 21 October 1915, where he was wounded.
