Lieutenant Colonel F. Lee Sanders joined the 3rd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment in July 1883, and was transferred as Major and second in command to the 6th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers in January 1899, when they were embodied and stationed at Chatham. He proceeded with the Battalion to South Africa, and on arrival at Orange River he was appointed Commandant at Zoutpans Drift, returning to Headquarters when the troops were withdrawn from that station. In June 1900 he took command of the detachment ordered to Fourteen Streams and immediately took in hand a thorough scheme of defence. In August the detachment was ordered to Christiana in the Transvaal. On arrival Major Sanders found himself in command of 250 Lancashire Fusiliers, 2 Companies of 3rd K.O.S.B., a troop of Diamond Field Horse and a body of District Mounted Troops. In August 1901 he returned with the Battalion to the U.K. and was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts, 4 September 1901. He took command of the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion in August 1908, and relinquished his command on 6 September 1911. The Army List shows him as entitled to the Queen’s South Africa medal only, with 4 clasps.
