William Crabtree was born and enlisted in Rochdale, Lancashire, for the 1/5th Battalion. he was killed in action on 6 September 1917, in the ill-fated attack on Iberia, Berry and Beck Farms, Third Battle of Ypres. His photograph appears in the Rochdale Observer 3 October 1917, which states that he “had served all through the Dardanelles campaign, and been twice wounded”.
