Harold Stephen enlisted at Rochdale (Middleton Junction) and served with the 9th Battalion. He was killed in action, aged 23 years, on 26 September 1916, during the battle for Thiepval Ridge, 26-28 September. The losses to the battalion over the two days fighting were nearly 400. He is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial.

David Stephen was born in Scotland and enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers at Middleton in the Lancashire Fusiliers, although he later transferred to the 7th Battalion, The King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, and was serving with them at the time of his death. He died on 4 November 1916, of wounds received in action on November 2nd. He was only 20 years of age, and had enlisted on 31 January 1916, going out to France in August.
