M.C. London Gazette 30 July 1919: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack south-east of Ypres on Hill 60 and the Caterpillar on September 28th, 1918. When a hostile machine gun was enfilading the line of advance he promptly led his men to a flank and rushed the post, capturing or killing the crew. In doing so he was badly wounded, but pressed forward and led his men to their objective, clearing out dug-outs and dislodging the enemy. He set a very fine example of pluck and determination.’

John Edward Coutts was attached to the 1/6th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, when he volunteered for service as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 26 September 1916. He saw action with the 1/6th Battalion in Gallipoli, eventually leaving the R.A.M.C. to join the 1/6th Battalion with a new number 352150. He was commissioned into the 5th Battalion on 27 february 1918, and attached to the 18th Battalion with whom he won the M.C. For more than 25 years he was secretary of the 42nd (East Lancs) Division Old Members Association. He died on 22 September 1951.
