M.C. London Gazette 4 October 1919: ‘During the attack near Tieghem, on 1st November, 1918, when his company was advancing to the Varent-Harlendries Road and a hostile battery was firing at point-blank range, he with great skill and courage rushed the position, capturing the guns and either killing or taking prisoners the crew. Throughout the operation he set a splendid example to his men.’

Ernest Mitchell served as a Private in the Public Schools Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers before being commissioned Temp. Lieutenant in the 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, on 5 February 1918. He formerly played at half-back for Sale Rugby Club, Manchester, and since the armistice took a prominent part in the Rugby competition of the 35th Division.
