Second Lieutenant John Hall Pile was killed in action in Italy on 8 December 1943 and is buried in Sangro River War Cemetery. The 28th Maori Battalion formed part of the 2nd New Zealand Division under General Freyburg and was heavily engaged at the crossing of the Sangro River in December 1943.
