Born Gillingham 3 March 1848. Joined the service as Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S.FORMIDABLE on 1 March 1863. Drafted to H.M.S.FAWN on 25 June 1864 for her 4 year Commission achieving the rate of Able Seaman in October 1867. Joined H.M.S.BEACON in July 1873, advanced to Leading Seaman in July 1874 and to Petty Officer status one month later. However, in December that year “ for misconduct” he suffered certain consequences, reversion to the rate of Able Seaman, loss of his good conduct badges and his entitlement to the emoluments stemming from the sub-specialist qualification of “lst Class Seaman Gunner”, which was also denied to him henceforth. Ten years later, his professionalism regained, he joined H.M.S. HUMBER as a Petty Officer First Class in June 1884, serving aboard her until July 1885. Pensioned without LS & GC reward in August 1888 from H.M.S. PEMBROKE.
