Born Fratton, Portsmouth on 3 January 1848. Joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ST VINCENT on 2 April 1862. Served aboard H.M.S. WARRIOR from 9 July 1863 until 22 November 1864, still as a Boy 2nd Class. Drafted to H.M.S. WOLVERENE as Boy 1st Class in May 1865, then to DUNCAN in October 1866 until April 1867. Advanced to Able Seaman in July 1870. Later served aboard H.M.S. EUPHRATES until May 1874, passing thereafter through many vessels, and changing his branch when made a Cook 2nd Class in February 1878, a rate he retained for the remainder of his service career. Served a sea commission aboard H.M.S. ROCKET (1879-83) and H.M.S. CROCODILE (1884-86) when pensioned to shore in February 1886. He lost all chance of being awarded an LS & GC award since he was deprived of two Good Conduct Badges in February 1883.
