The Honourable Edward Downes Law was born 9 May 1841. First entered the service as a Naval Cadet aboard H.M.S. COLOSSUS on 10 August 1854, receiving promotion to Midshipman in July 1856. Served aboard HIGHFLYER (1856-61) being made a Sub Lieutenant on 11 March 1860, and subsequently aboard SHANNON (1862-65). Promoted to Lieutenant on 31 August 1861. After serving aboard PHOEBE (1867-68) he joined COQUETTE in July 1872 until retired with the rank of Commander on 1st October 1873. He succeeded his uncle as the 5th Baron, Lord Ellenborough, on 26 June 1902 and died on 9 December 1915.
