The iron Steam Mail Ship VOLTA, gross tonnage of 1,477, which had been built in Govan in 1870 was taken up by Commodore Hewett in late 1873, from its owners The British & African Steam Navigation Company. An engineer by name of Vickery was engaged during the Ashantee War. The engineer of the Colonial Steamer Lady of the Lake, taken up by Captain Glover for use on the River Volta, was a Mr Peterson. Two steam launches were also supplied by the Admiralty for the “Glover Expedition.”
