John Beaver was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on 16 December 1845 and first entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class on 9 May 1861. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman in June 1866 whilst aboard H.M.S. LIVERPOOL (1862-67), and to Able Seaman in November 1873. Drafted to H.M.S. FLY on 25 June 1874 for two years. His only claim to notoriety would derive from the loss and restoration of his first good conduct badge on six separate occasions, but never achieved the award of his second badge before being pensioned on 18 February 1884.
