John Henwood was born in Torpoint, Cornwall on 21 April 1836 and joined the service as Shipwright aboard H.M.S. LEOPARD on 12 October 1862 until she was paid off in September 1866. He then earned his living as a tradesman in Devonport Dockyard until 19 December 1868, but was not allowed to count this ‘hired time’ towards his naval pension. Immediately after relinquishing his job as a ‘dockyard matey’ he joined H.M.S. LYNX as Caulkers Mate. After serving aboard H.M.S. MODESTE (1874-77) he was drafted to H.M.S. LONDON where he received advancement to Caulker on 19 September 1877, and his L.S. & G.C. medal on 24 June 1878 after 13 years reckonable service (recorded only on his earlier servitude papers covering his Continuous Service time which for all men ceased on 31 December 1872). He was pensioned from H.M.S. INDUS on 23 December 1884.
