George Connett was born in November 1844 at Kingskerswell, Devon. He was enlisted into the Plymouth Division of the R.M.L.I. as a Private,7th Company, on 16 May 1864, transferring to become a Gunner in the Royal Marine Artillery on 1 April 1865. Subsequently promoted to Bombadier in November 1872, to Corporal in October 1876 and to Sergeant in August 1879. After serving a commission aboard H.M.S. ECLIPSE (1868-72) he was drafted to H.M.S. HART on 22 January 1874 until she was paid off on 13 March 1876. Was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal as a Corporal whilst serving ashore at his corps Head Quarters on 15 November 1876. For the Egyptian campaign he was detailed on 30 June 1882, as a Sergeant, to form part of the Mediterranean Battalion, taking part in the battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Promoted to Colour Sergeant on 1 February 1883 and pensioned on 18 May 1885.
